Apparently I had not looked at this particular rim (or the matching front one) closely or thoughtfully before, because the front one has the same thing. I'm pleased since (a) I don't have to buy a new rim, and (b) this rim is nicely true and the one I just swapped in (which isn't) can go back where it was, in waiting.
